About St Tropez and our Luxury Holiday Villas in the Area

A Brief Overview of St Tropez

St Tropez is one of the most legendary places in the world. There can’t be too many other fishing villages with dozens of Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury boutiques, where yachts outnumber cars in the summer months. Brigitte Bardot put the town firmly on the map when she strolled along the beach in her bikini in the 1950s, and it has been a chic holiday destination ever since. The town is constantly changing and reinventing itself, there are new restaurants, shops and clubs to discover every year. The atmosphere is relaxed and leisurely, and the unofficial motto of St Tropez is ‘Anything goes!’.

The port is the heart of town and the place to be seen in St Tropez. The terraces of the restaurants and bars overlook the harbour where superyachts are moored alongside fishing boats, and people-watching is everybody’s favourite occupation. If you’re an early bird, there are two morning markets in the port where many of the town’s restaurants buy their produce. The Place aux Herbes has sold fruit and vegetables to Tropéziennes for hundreds of years, and the Halle aux Poissons can’t be beaten for fresh fish. On the north side of the harbour is the Môle Jean-Réveille jetty with stunning views over the bay of St Tropez and surrounding mountains. The jetty inspired Impressionist painters Matisse and Signac who came to St Tropez for the scenery and stayed for the golden French Riviera light.

Just a short walk away from the port is the beautiful Place des Lice. The rest of St Tropez may be pretty glitzy, but this is still a traditional village square with a twice-weekly food and flower market. The Tropéziennes use the Place to play petanque and to sip espressos at local favourite Le Café. Sit under one of the plane trees with an ice cream or borrow a spare set of boules from the bar and join a game to experience the ambience for yourself.

Round the corner in Place Blanqui, you’ll find a museum dedicated to one of France’s best-known films, ‘Le gendarme de Saint-Tropez’. The film stars Louis de Funès as a policeman reassigned from a small village to St Tropez, and shenanigans quickly ensue when he arrives in town. The film and its sequels are beloved by the French but not very well-known outside of France. The police station where much of it was filmed has now become the Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma, so if you see people taking selfies outside, you’ll know why.

The Old Town of St Tropez is the prettiest part of the village with its pastel coloured buildings and narrow alleyways. It’s a total shopper’s paradise with a fantastic mix of designer boutiques and regular stores, ideal for picking up couture and croissants. This is also the best place to buy the famous Tropézienne leather sandals which were created right here in the Old Town in the 1920s. Once the shopping is over, take a walk through the shady streets which provide a welcome break from the summer heat and plenty of opportunity for indulging in a cool drink or two. There is a lovely parish church on Rue Gambetta to visit with a statue of St Tropez himself, originally a martyred Roman soldier called Torpetius.

High above the Old Town is St Tropez’s 17th-century Citadel, which sits at the top of the hill overlooking the village and the bay. The view from the top is well worth the climb up, and there is an interesting Museum of Maritime History in the former dungeons. Although it’s not widely publicised, the museum offers guided tours in English upon reservation.

If you’re hoping to soak up the sun while you’re in town, you won’t be disappointed by St Tropez’s numerous beaches. There are three beaches in the centre of town, and miles of golden sand along the Pampelonne and the Sentier du Littoral. Beach clubs like Club 55 and the Tahiti offer live music, food and drinks all day and most of the night served in the comfort and privacy of your sunlounger. Nearer the village, the Plage des Graniers and the Plage des Salins are great for relaxing and enjoying a swim or a seafood lunch in one of the beach restaurants.

When is best to visit St Tropez?

St Tropez is an epic summer destination. During the hot summer months, the bars and restaurants open late into the evening, and the nightclubs are legendary, with superstar DJs taking to the decks and the dancefloor. From May to September the town is at its busiest when the season is in full swing. There are music festivals and concerts every week in the Old Town, and the port is the perfect spot to sit and soak up the atmosphere.

But the St Tropez region is also well worth a visit out of season, as the weather is mild and sunny all year round. Come in the springtime and catch the sailing regattas from March onwards. Watch from the port or get out onto the water for a close-up view of the fun.

In winter, the area around St Tropez is full of charming festivals celebrating everything from chestnuts to truffles. Browse the stalls, sample some of the goodies and make the most of the empty streets before the summer madness starts all over again the following year.

In short, St Tropez is an outstanding place to visit all year round. It just depends on what you’re interested in seeing and doing.

Luxury Villas to Rent in St Tropez

There are many stunning villas in and around St Tropez. If you’re looking for an exclusive property in this area, we have a great selection of both traditional and contemporary holiday houses available all year-round.

Think pink with this gorgeous pastel-coloured Bastide in St Tropez. The 11-bedroom bastide is set in a 4-acre park and surrounded by trees and gardens. There is a separate guesthouse for visiting friends, and independent staff quarters to ensure privacy. It’s located just 5 minutes away from the beach but with a heated swimming pool, tennis and petanque courts plus a helipad, you may end up never leaving the luxury villa during your stay.

If you’re looking to get away from it all for a few days, then this Provençal villa in the hills above St Tropez is ideal. It’s only a short drive away from town but is hidden amongst the peaceful vineyards of Gassin. What could be nicer than waking up in one of the villa’s 4 beautifully-decorated bedrooms surrounded by the lush gardens and green hills of St Tropez? On the ground floor, there is a large shady terrace for drinks or dinner and a heated infinity pool with a wrap around deck and barbecue area for sociable evenings in.

One of our favourite modern properties is this contemporary residence which is located in the l’Escalet area, close to the beach. This is a great choice if you like to throw a party as it has a state-of-the-art entertainment system and lots of outdoor space. Relax by the pool or in the jacuzzi, then retire to the terrace and watch the sun go down over the Mediterranean, this is what a vacation is all about.

Perfect for social butterflies, this newly-renovated 5-bedroom house is a 4-minute drive away from the vibrant beach clubs of Pampelonne. Set on one level, the master bedroom opens onto the terrace and overlooks the pool and gardens. The large living area is open-plan and has some wonderful sea views. Luxury Villa Rentals Near St Tropez

If you're looking for accommodation in the areas around St Tropez, take a look at our collection below.

Must See and Do in St Tropez

St Tropez might be a small village, but it has some of the hippest bars and restaurants on the French Riviera and a very busy social calendar. When in town make like a local and spend time strolling around the markets, people watching in the port, or relaxing over a really good meal. We’ve put together a few other suggestions to help you make the most of your stay.

Try a local delicacy

While you’re in St Tropez, you must try a slice of Tarte Tropézienne, an absolutely delicious brioche-style pastry with a creamy custard filling and crunchy sugar topping. According to local legend, it was named by Brigitte Bardot herself, and it’s the perfect afternoon treat. Various versions are sold all over the French Riviera, but the official recipe remains a closely-guarded secret. Steer clear of imitations and head to the original ‘La Tarte Tropézienne Bakery’ in Place des Lices where it was created back in 1955. Order a coffee and a slice of tart to eat on the sunny terrace and remember, you’re on holiday, so the calories don’t count!

Hit the beach

The beaches in St Tropez are gorgeous but can get very crowded, very quickly during the summer season. Give Pampelonne a miss and make your way to L’Escalet beach instead. It’s a beautiful little hidden gem between Cap Taillat and Cap Camarat, with rocky coves and a mixture of pebbles and white sand for sunbathing. The first beach can be busy, but the further you walk, the quieter it gets. This is the perfect spot for snorkelling or diving, with crystal clear water and lots of marine life close to the shore. There are no restaurants on L’Escalet, but there is a floating café which cruises the coastline selling ice-cream, doughnuts and chilled champagne, all your basic necessities for a day out at the beach in St Tropez.

Escape into the hills

The St Tropez region isn’t just famous for its beaches and nightlife, it’s also known for its excellent wine. Hidden away in the hills overlooking the town, the Domaine la Tourraque produces organic Côtes de Provence wines and olive oil. Drive up the twisty mountain roads and spend a day at this small family-run domaine learning about the grapes, harvest and history of winemaking from the owner himself. The Domaine offers 4x4 tours and a chance to visit a beautiful private beach which forms part of the property. After the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to taste a selection of their AOC Côtes de Provence wines in the cellar accompanied by homegrown olives and tapenade. This is a real Provençal experience not to be missed.

Dine out in style

St Tropez is full of great places to eat. There are so many restaurants that you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a place for dinner. Le Dit Vin in the Old Town is the perfect spot for an unforgettable evening. Run by a husband and wife team, they specialise in using local, organic ingredients. Chef Emmanuel Vitorino produces Mediterranean cuisine with a modern twist, and there is no freezer in the restaurant kitchen, everything is served fresh. Arrive early for an aperitif, and some live music in the bar downstairs then dine under the stars on the upstairs terrace for the full Saint Tropez experience. The decadent homemade Nutella tiramisu served in a Mason jar comes highly recommended!
