A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF BIOT
Tucked away between the coast and the hills, Biot is one of the most charming and unspoilt villages on the French Riviera. Built on the site of an ancient volcano and founded by Celts, Biot has had a long and colourful past over the years. At various points during its history the village has been ransacked by pirates, taken over by crusaders and destroyed by both revolution and the black plague. In the 14th Century the village was even left abandoned for a brief period. However, it was rebuilt by the Italians in the 15th Century and quickly became known for producing clay jars which were shipped all over the world up from the nearby port of Antibes. These days pirates and crusaders are few and far between along the coast, but Biot still produces beautiful ceramics which are highly sought-after by both visitors and locals alike.
In the 1950’s Eloi Monod put the town firmly on the world map when he created “La Verrerie de Biot”. His glass studio was the first place to produce the now famous Biot ‘bubble glass’ and during the 60s and 70s the village became an international centre for glassmaking. Following on from the success of the craft industries, Biot also started to attract artists and musicians. Well-known painters Raymond Peyner and Fernand Leger both worked and made their home in the little village. With its strong connection to the art world and an ideal location in the heart of the French Riviera, today Biot has become a haven for artists of all kind. The village centre is full of workshops and galleries, with artisans showcasing everything from luxury leather goods to exquisite jewellery and silverwork, all handmade in Biot.
With its mild Mediterranean climate and endless golden sunshine, Biot is a great choice for a base on the French Riviera. Perched on top of a hill, the town is surrounded by lush greenery and has some of the best views in the region.
