The heart of Cannes is known as La Banane thanks to its unique banana-shape layout. Encompassing the Croisette and the Carré d’Or, plus everything in between, this is where you’ll find the city’s luxury boutiques and most exciting restaurants and bars. The Carré d’Or is home to endless designer stores selling everything from dazzling jewellery to glamorous gowns. And in the evening, this neighbourhood is home to some of the best bistros and bars in the city. Whether you’re after cocktails or a 5-course dining extravaganza, this is the place to be. Stroll down from the Carré d’Or to the seafront and you’ll come to the Boulevard de la Croisette. Famous for its palm trees and sandy beaches, the Croisette is the perfect place for lunch with friends, or to people watch in the sunshine.

At the far end of the Croisette sits the ultra-modern Palm Beach neighbourhood. This area is made up of luxurious waterfront residences and is peaceful and quiet thanks to its location just outside the city centre. Close enough to the Carré d’Or to walk to your favourite restaurant for dinner, Palm Beach will make a great base for your next Cannes adventure.

Moving away from Palm Beach back up the Croisette, you’ll come accross the historical port area and Le Suquet, the old town of Cannes. Back in the days when Cannes used to be a tiny village, this was where the fisherman lived and worked. These days the neighbourhood is very much up and coming, with lots of quirky boutiques and exciting restaurants tucked away in its narrow streets. Le Suquet is also home to many of Cannes most interesting museums and art galleries, and will be a fantastic home away from home during your city break.

If you’d rather find an apartment that little bit further out of town, the Super Cannes neighbourhood is one of the most exclusive. Quiet and secluded, apartments here comes with stunning sea views as standard. Enjoy staying in a residence among the lush greenery of the Cannes hills, it’s a world away from the busy city.

Another glamorous hillside district to consider is La Californie. This part of town is chock full of gorgeous Belle Epoque architecture, and is where some of Cannes most famous residents have their properties. With the city centre and the beaches just a few minutes away by car, you’ll love staying in this most stylish and elegant neighbourhood.

We think you’ll agree, Cannes is always a good idea. Thanks to its Mediterranean climate the temperature stays constant all year round and blue skies are always in style on the French Riviera. Cannes is buzzing throughout the year but the summer months are particularly popular in the South of France. The sandy beaches and glorious scenery make Cannes a great place to vacation in July and August, but then again there’s never a bad time to visit the Festival City.

Hit the museum

Up in Le Suquet, you’ll find the fascinating Musée de la Castre which is well worth a visit. The museum is located in what was once a medieval monastery and is surrounded by a gorgeous garden. Take in rooms full of Mediterranean antiques and Provençal paintings before moving on to the exotic art exhibition and the incredible array of musical instruments from all over the world. Once you’ve checked out the museum, climb up the dozens of stone steps to the top of the 12th Century tower. Enjoy breathtaking views over the city and the bay below. Then climb all the way down again and relax in the museum’s shady courtyard before heading off for lunch in lovely Le Suquet.

Try a local dish

Although technically bouillabaisse originated in Marseille, this tasty fish stew is a Provençal speciality and it’s served all over the French Riviera. There are lots of places to try it in Cannes, but we think it’s served best on the beach with a side order of sunshine. So why not head down the coast to neighbouring Golfe-Juan and reserve a table Chez Nounou. The chefs at Chez Nounou has been making delicious bouillabaisse every day since 1928 and they really know their stuff. The sunny terrace is the perfect place to enjoy an aperitif and a big bowl of freshly-made bouillabaisse seasoned with local herbs and spices. Enjoy a leisurely lunch overlooking the Mediterranean and then laze away the afternoon on the pristine white sand, what could be nicer?

Night swimming

A daytime swim in the Mediterranean is always lovely but the beaches can be busy. So we’ve found a much better option. While you’re in Cannes, why not avoid the crowds and go for a nighttime swim instead? Charter a private boat and head out to the beautiful creek on the island of St Honorat just opposite Cannes. At night the islands are deserted and the warm water is perfect for a midnight dip. Swim under the stars and then hop back on board and sail by the light of the moon towards the city across the bay.

Visit the market

One of Cannes’ biggest attractions is its daily market. The Marché Forville in the heart of Cannes is where nearly all the town’s restaurants stock up on fresh provisions. The covered stalls are bursting with fruit and vegetables grown locally and this is the very best place in town to find gorgeous fresh flowers. We recommend going along on Thursdays when the Maison de l’Olive stall holds its weekly tasting sessions. Try delicious local olives flavoured with herbs or lemon and handmade tapenade on tiny slices of crusty bread. Their beautifully presented sachets of black olives will make the perfect souvenir of your holiday in Cannes.
