The tradition of crowning a monarch dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era, when kings were selected by a council of elders and crowned by a bishop. The Norman Conquest in 1066 brought changes to the coronation ceremony, which was now performed in Westminster Abbey by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Over the centuries, the coronation ceremony has evolved, with each monarch adding their own unique touches. The ceremony became more elaborate, with the crown jewels playing a central role in the proceedings. The coronation oath was also introduced, which required the monarch to swear an oath of allegiance to the Church of England and promise to uphold the laws and customs of the realm.

Now, as we approach the coronation of King Charles III, we are witnessing the continuation of this long-standing tradition. The coronation ceremony will be held in Westminster Abbey, the same location where monarchs have been crowned for over a thousand years. The ceremony will be presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who will anoint the new king with holy oil and present him with the crown and sceptre.
